Most oppose Trump plans, say Greens

The Greens have taken their election campaign to the heart of Donald Trump's controversial golf resort as a poll indicated a majority of Scots oppose the plan.

The survey, commissioned by the party, put public opinion at almost two to one against the complex at Menie, Aberdeenshire.

Green co-leader Patrick Harvie highlighted the results before a campaign visit to protester Molly Forbes, 86, who fears she will lose her home to make way for the resort.

Mr Harvie said: "Increasingly, people are taking a very simple view on this issue. On one side they see a bullying billionaire bent on throwing vulnerable local residents from their own homes and on trashing this extraordinary environment.

"On the other side, Molly Forbes and others living on the Menie Estate have become reluctant local heroes, the last line of defence against Trump's evictions and bulldozers. The other parties in Parliament must now say whose side they're on, and I urge them to make a stand for local people and against Trump."

Mr Harvie's party is contesting the Gordon constituency, which takes in Mr Trump's land on the North Sea coast.

Local Green candidate Sue Edwards, who is a member of opposition group Tripping Up Trump, said: "These figures continue a trend - the more people have learnt of Donald Trump's plans and his methods, the more unpopular his scheme has become.

"The Trump Organisation should now publicly announce that it has abandoned any intention of seeking to use compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) against residents.
